DESIGN020 | Amsterdam ijburg

A simple structural system of concrete elements transforms a trapezoidal plot of land into a nearly transparent building with a raw, industrial character. Situated in Amsterdam’s most ambitious extension of its urban plan, the building stands on the water at the end of an artificial island called Steigereiland.

Austere and monotonous facades contrast with the rich and complex interior spacial organization. The floor plans were devised to create an adventurous  routing through the exposition space (4.500 m2), which extends over three stories and ends in a roof terrace with views to the Amsterdam skyline. The building, built to display furniture and objects created by prominent contemporary designers, uses natural light as its main lighting source, and houses a café/restaurant.
